Heavy rainstorm wreaks havoc in Accra

A heavy rainstorm accompanied by powerful gusty winds and lightning swept through Accra late yesterday afternoon, leaving a trail of destruction in various parts of the capital.
At Kokomlemle, the storm briefly disrupted the transmission of several radio stations belonging to the Multimedia Group.
The strong winds interfered with broadcasting equipment, causing a temporary blackout on some platforms.

Property Damage at East Legon’s A&C Mall
At the A&C Mall in East Legon, the storm caused the collapse of a carport, resulting in damage to several parked vehicles. Witnesses described how the winds ripped through the parking area, toppling structures and leaving car owners scrambling to assess the damage.

Traffic chaos across the capital
The storm also worsened rush-hour traffic, frustrating both drivers and commuters.
Gridlocks were reported in multiple areas as fallen branches and poor visibility slowed movement. Many motorists called on the police to intervene and help manage congestion.

Meteorological Agency’s prior warning
The Ghana Meteorological Agency had issued a weather warning hours before the storm, cautioning residents about the impending heavy rains and strong winds.
Despite the warning, many were caught off guard as the day had been sunny until the sudden shift in weather conditions.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially during stormy weather, and to take necessary precautions to prevent damage and ensure safety.
