Prof Opoku-Agyemang seeks medical treatment abroad

Vice-President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has traveled abroad for medical treatment upon expert recommendation.
This decision follows an unexpected illness she suffered on Friday, March 28, 2025, leading to initial treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
A statement released by the Presidency’s Communications Directorate on Sunday, March 30, 2025, confirmed that the Vice-President sought medical attention at UGMC on Saturday.
The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Minister for Government Communications, disclosed that medical experts advised further treatment abroad to ensure her full recovery.
“We extend our best wishes to the Vice President for a speedy recovery,” the statement concluded.
A Pattern Among Ghanaian LeadersVice President Opoku-Agyemang joins a long list of Ghanaian political figures who have sought medical treatment outside the country.
Former President J.E.A. Mills (deceased), President Nana Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, have all traveled abroad for medical care.
Tragically, some prominent leaders have passed away while receiving treatment overseas.
E.T. Mensah, a former Minister of Youth and Sports under President Rawlings and the longest-serving MP for Ningo-Prampram, died in South Africa. Former MP for Bawku Central, Hawa Ogede Yakubu, also passed away in the United Kingdom.

A reflection of Ghana’s healthcare challenges
The frequent overseas medical trips by political leaders have reignited discussions on the state of healthcare in Ghana.
Many argue that these trips underscore a lack of confidence in the country’s healthcare system and raise concerns about the commitment of leaders to improve local medical facilities.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the deficiencies of Ghana’s healthcare system, reinforcing the need for significant investment in local hospitals and medical training.
Critics question why high-ranking officials continue to rely on foreign healthcare instead of channeling resources into strengthening domestic institutions.
As Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang receives treatment abroad, the conversation around Ghana’s healthcare system remains a pressing issue, with citizens calling for urgent reforms to ensure quality medical care for all.
