National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has declared his intention to contest the position of National First Vice-Chairman, promising to lead efforts to restore discipline, unity and stronger party structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a statement announcing his decision, Mr Ahiagbah said the NPP must use its ongoing reorganisation process to reflect on its 2024 electoral defeat and move forward with renewed energy and purpose.

He said the party’s future depends on reconnecting with its founding principles of liberty, the rule of law and free market ideals, while building a more disciplined and united organisation.

“Discipline, cohesion, unity,” he said, stressing that without discipline there could be no cohesion, and without cohesion, the party could not achieve the victory it seeks in 2028.

Mr Ahiagbah urged delegates to elect a National First Vice-Chairman capable of working with the National Chairman to rebuild the party, strengthen its structures and reconnect with grassroots members.

Five-point agenda

Outlining his vision, the NPP Communications Director said his leadership would focus on renewing the party’s liberal-conservative values, improving administration at all levels and promoting accountability and mutual respect among members.

He also pledged to champion inclusion within the party to ensure that every member feels valued and heard, while supporting efforts to transform the NPP into a united and election-ready organisation.

Mr Ahiagbah maintained that the NPP remains “Ghana’s best path to prosperity, strong leadership and good governance,” but acknowledged that voters are demanding a new generation of leaders with discipline, integrity and the ability to unite the party.

“I am prepared to meet those expectations,” he said, appealing to delegates for their support, guidance and prayers.

The NPP is scheduled to elect its national executives in September 2026 as part of a broader restructuring exercise following its defeat in the 2024 elections.

The party is expected to use the new leadership structure to reposition itself for the task of challenging the governing party in the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
