University of Ghana lecturers threaten strike over unpaid allowance
The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has threatened industrial action from Monday, October 19, 2026, over the government’s failure to pay its members’ 2026 Book and Research Allowance.
The association announced its intention to withdraw teaching and related services in a notice dated October 9, 2026, citing persistent delays in the payment of the allowance.
Addressing the notice to the National Labour Commission, UTAG-UG said the delay contravened a Memorandum of Agreement signed with the government in 2020. Under the agreement, the allowance is expected to be paid by the end of August each year.
The association has set Friday, October 16, 2026, as the deadline for the government to settle the outstanding amount, warning that failure to meet the deadline would trigger the planned action.
“Given the current circumstances, if by Friday 16th October 2026 these monies are not paid, members of UTAG-UG will withdraw all teaching and related services beginning Monday 19th of October 2026,” the notice stated.
The notice was signed by UTAG-UG president Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison and secretary Godfred Bright Hagan.
Copies were forwarded to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the ministers responsible for Employment and Labour Relations, Finance and Education, the Director of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the national president of UTAG.
The latest warning adds to previous concerns raised by the University of Ghana branch over delays in the payment of the allowance, which helps lecturers finance their academic and research work.
A withdrawal of teaching and related services could affect lectures and other academic activities at the university if the government fails to pay the allowance before the October 16 deadline.
