Public transport fares across the country are set to rise by 20%, beginning Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The fare adjustment follows a directive from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), issued in collaboration with Transport Unions, in line with the arrangement on public transport fares.

The fare increase affects intra-city trotro services, inter-city transport, and shared taxi operations across the country. It was announced on Friday, May 29, 2026, by the GPRTU and allied transport unions following consultations with members and key stakeholders.

According to the transport operators, the adjustment has become necessary due to the continued rise in fuel prices and the escalating cost of vehicle maintenance items such as tyres, batteries, engine oil, and other essential spare parts.

The GPRTU National Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said the current economic conditions have placed heavy financial strain on drivers and vehicle owners, making it increasingly difficult to operate without revising fares.

He noted that the increase had been delayed for some time in anticipation of improved fuel prices following government assurances. However, he said the situation has not improved, forcing operators to act.

“This increment should have come long ago, but we held on because of expectations that prices would go down. Looking at where things are now, if we don’t adjust fares, it will seriously affect operations. Drivers are really struggling,” he said.

He added that several internal discussions were held to find solutions, but the delay in addressing the issue due to policy expectations left operators with limited options.
