Telecel Ghana investment rises to $1.4bn
Sam George, Communications Minister
Telecel Ghana’s capital investment has risen by 60% between 2023 and 2026, reaching about $1.4 billion from approximately $893 million previously, with the company undertaking upgrades on about 2,900 network sites.
The Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, describing the increase as evidence of growing private-sector commitment to Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure.
He said the investment was moving towards $1.5 billion, representing a significant increase over the preceding four-year period and reflecting efforts by Telecel Ghana to improve network quality and nationwide coverage.
2,900 sites moving to 4G
As part of the investment, Telecel Ghana is upgrading approximately 2,900 network sites, including the migration of infrastructure from 3G to 4G.
The upgrades are expected to expand access to faster mobile broadband services while improving the reliability, quality and availability of telecommunications services across the country.
Mr George said the modernisation programme formed part of Telecel Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen its network infrastructure and respond to growing demand for reliable digital connectivity.
Investment key to digital economy
The Minister said the increase in investment demonstrated the importance of sustained private-sector participation in the telecommunications sector.
He noted that continued investment in network infrastructure was critical to Ghana’s digital transformation, given the growing dependence of businesses, households and public services on reliable telecommunications services.
According to him, the scale of Telecel Ghana’s investment showed that the company was committing significantly more resources to network expansion and modernisation than during the preceding period.
The government, he added, remained focused on creating conditions that would encourage telecommunications operators to increase investment in network expansion and digital connectivity.
With about 2,900 sites undergoing upgrades, the programme is expected to strengthen Telecel Ghana’s 4G footprint and improve mobile connectivity for customers across the country.
