Strike suspended as teachers return to classrooms
Teachers strike
Three major teacher unions have suspended their industrial strike following negotiations with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), paving the way for teachers to return to the classroom.
The unions—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG)—are expected to continue discussions with the relevant authorities to address the outstanding issues that triggered the strike.
Announcing the suspension after a meeting with the FWSC, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the decision followed engagements with the Ministry of Employment and the Council of State over concerns affecting teachers.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he said.
The industrial action stemmed from unresolved grievances involving teacher promotions, conditions of service and deprived-area allowances.
The unions also cited delays in the payment of promotion-related arrears, which had emerged as one of their key concerns.
Earlier on October 9, 2026, the Council of State invited representatives of the unions to a meeting aimed at addressing the issues surrounding the strike by pre-tertiary teachers.
The suspension is expected to create room for further negotiations as the unions and the relevant authorities work towards resolving the outstanding concerns.
