Members of Parliament will meet on January 5, 2025, to elect the Speaker of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin said the Presidential Transition Act made provision for the election of a speaker two clear days ahead of the presidential inauguration on January 7.
That, he said, was to avoid the chaos, which occurred during the election of the speaker of the Eighth Parliament in 2021, while dignitaries at the presidential inauguration were kept waiting.
Speaker Bagbin said this on Monday during deliberations in Parliament on the Business Statement of the House for the week ending January 20.
“Under the new provisions the Members of Parliament-elect would meet to elect a speaker two days earlier, who would be sworn-in on January 7, before proceeding to the presidential inauguration,” he noted.
