NADMO battles floods in Ga Central Municipality

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ga Central Municipal Office, has confirmed flash flooding in parts of the municipality following continuous heavy rainfall that began overnight on Saturday, 6th June 2026, and persisted into the afternoon of Sunday, 7th June 2026.

Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed with active operations.

The affected communities include Nii Okaiman West (Kwashiebu) and Ablekuma New Town, with additional concern raised over a high-risk settlement along the Nsakina River near Olebu Six-to-Six.

Authorities confirmed that no casualties or fatalities were recorded during the incident.

Flooding impact across affected communities

According to NADMO field reports, the prolonged rainfall led to significant surface water accumulation in residential areas, particularly in Kwashiebu. In several compounds, floodwater reached ankle-to-knee height, disrupting movement and daily activities.

Residents in many affected homes were reportedly aware of the worsening weather conditions and had begun taking precautionary steps to protect property before the flooding intensified.

The primary challenge faced by households was the need for urgent pumping of stagnant water from residential compounds.

In Ablekuma New Town, the situation was more extensive, with widespread inundation reported. Many homes were surrounded by standing water, and access routes within affected areas were partially blocked, making movement difficult.

NADMO officers from the Ga Central Municipal Office were deployed promptly to the affected areas to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance.

• Deployment of water-pumping equipment to remove floodwater from affected homes

Critical warning issued over Nsakina Riverbank settlement

A more severe situation was observed along the Nsakina River in Ablekuma New Town, where the river overflowed its banks, causing significant flooding in surrounding areas.

Structures built directly along the riverbank were heavily affected, prompting immediate safety warnings from authorities. Families residing in these high-risk zones were formally advised to evacuate due to the imminent danger posed by continued rainfall and rising water levels.

However, NADMO reported that some residents expressed reluctance to relocate despite repeated warnings.

The Ga Central Municipal Assembly has since marked several structures for demolition, citing unapproved construction on the floodplain and riverbank.

NADMO has issued a strong directive urging all residents in the Nsakina riverbank settlement to relocate immediately to safer locations to avoid potential loss of life should conditions worsen.
