Sulaiman Abubakar has resigned as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Mion, bringing his tenure to an abrupt end just weeks after emerging victorious in the party’s internal elections.

In a letter dated August 8, 2026, and addressed to the NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Abubakar announced his resignation with immediate effect.

“My resignation is personal,” he wrote.

He expressed appreciation to the party’s Council of Elders, patrons, polling station executives, electoral area executives, members and supporters in the constituency for the confidence they placed in him while he served as chairman.

Although he has relinquished the leadership role, Mr Abubakar reaffirmed his loyalty to the NPP, saying he would continue working towards the party’s electoral success.

“I remain an ardent and good-standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he said.

He further wished the constituency executives well and indicated that he would maintain close ties with the party.

The resignation letter did not provide any explanation for his decision. His exit comes less than two weeks after he won the Mion Constituency chairman position in the NPP’s internal polls.
