Mahama swears in 2nd Deputy BoG Governor

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), with a clear mandate to support the Bank’s management in achieving economic and institutional targets.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Presidency, was attended by key government and Bank of Ghana officials, including Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Governor of the BoG Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, First Deputy Governor Dr. Zakari Mumuni, Chief of Staff Mr. Julius Debrah, and Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President.

Restoring credibility and competence at BoG
President Mahama said the appointment of Mrs. Asante-Asiedu goes beyond administrative routine, symbolizing the country’s broader effort to restore professionalism, integrity, and competence at one of its most critical institutions.
“The Bank of Ghana is not just a regulator. It is a symbol of national economic sovereignty and a guardian of public confidence in our financial system,” he stated.
He emphasized that his administration is committed to repositioning public institutions to reflect the values of merit, transparency, and public service—beginning with the central bank.

Economy showing signs of recovery
Recalling the state of the economy at the start of his administration, President Mahama described it as distressed, with investor confidence at rock bottom, soaring inflation, a depreciating cedi, and a precarious debt situation.
He noted that the domestic debt exchange programme added further strain to the financial system.
However, he commended the leadership of BoG Governor Dr. Asiamah and his team for initiating a strong recovery process.
“Inflation, while still high, is moderating. The cedi has appreciated by 3.16% on the interbank market and nearly five per cent on the Forex Bureau market,” he said, attributing the gains to prudent monetary policy, improved foreign exchange liquidity, and coordinated fiscal efforts.

International confidence growing
President Mahama also highlighted the recent staff-level agreement reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the fourth review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility programme as a sign of renewed international trust in the country’s economic governance.
It is within this context, he said, that Mrs. Asante-Asiedu is joining the Bank’s leadership, bringing a wealth of experience and a commitment to inclusive financial development.
Mrs. Asante-Asiedu previously served as Group Head of Retail Banking at Access Bank Ghana, a role the President said placed her at the front lines of addressing financial inclusion for households and small businesses.
He praised her background in corporate communications and institutional reform, describing her skills as vital to rebuilding public trust and fostering a more accessible financial system.
“You are joining a team not just stabilizing the economy, but transforming our financial sector,” President Mahama told her, urging her to lead with clarity, integrity, and purpose.

Asante-Asiedu pledges professionalism and integrity
In her remarks, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve and pledged to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and professionalism.
“I am honoured by this appointment and committed to contributing meaningfully to the Bank’s mission and our national development goals,” she stated.
President Mahama concluded with a charge: “May you serve with distinction. Your appointment is not just a position—it is a public trust.”
