A fire outbreak at the Dzorwulu Bulk Supply Point in Accra on Sunday, May 4, plunged several parts of the capital into darkness, disrupting electricity supply to homes, businesses, and essential services.
Thick black smoke was seen rising from the facility in the early hours of the day, drawing the attention of nearby residents and commuters.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of alarm as flames engulfed sections of the station, prompting an emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Firefighters arrived at the scene promptly and worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which posed a significant risk to surrounding areas. As of press time, firefighting efforts were ongoing, and the exact cause of the fire had yet to be determined.
Authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety, urging residents to stay away from the vicinity while investigations and recovery efforts continue.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in a statement, confirmed the fire and its impact on the power supply. The company apologised to affected customers and assured the public that electricity would be restored once the fire is extinguished and safety checks are completed.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and call for calm and cooperation from the general public,” the statement said.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the reliability and resilience of power infrastructure in the capital. ECG has pledged to update customers as the situation develops.
