In a major shake-up aimed at halting a worrying slump in form, Asante Kotoko has appointed Abdul Karim Zito as interim head coach following the dismissal of Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, as the club unveiled key changes to its technical leadership.
The restructuring comes in the wake of a disappointing run of four matches without a win, with the Porcupine Warriors keen to salvage their season.
Zito returns
A statement released by the club confirmed Zito’s dual appointment as Technical Director and Acting Head Coach.
A former Kotoko player and coach, Zito brings a wealth of experience at both club and national levels.
He famously guided Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and led Ghana’s U-20 team to the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title.
“Asante Kotoko SC is pleased to announce key changes to the club’s technical leadership as part of an ongoing strategic restructuring,” the club said.
“Coach Zito returns with vast experience and a strong vision for the club’s future.”
Prince Owusu joins as Assistant Coach
As part of the overhaul, Prince Yaw Owusu has been named Assistant Coach.
A seasoned tactician with over 20 years of experience across Ghana, Sudan, and the United States, Owusu has previously held coaching roles at Medeama SC, Inter Allies, Khartoum National Club, and the Ghana U-20 national team.
He is widely respected for his commitment to youth development, having mentored several players who now feature for top European clubs such as AC Milan, Genoa, Sassuolo, and Fiorentina.
Malik Jabir now technical advisor
In addition to the new coaching appointments, Kotoko confirmed that Malik Jabir will now serve as Technical Advisor.
Jabir, who has previously acted as Technical Director for the club, will provide strategic input to guide long-term planning and player development.
Renewed vision for competitive success
“These appointments are part of the club’s renewed commitment to building a strong, visionary technical structure aimed at sustained competitive success,” the club noted.
The reshuffle is seen as a critical step to revitalize the team, which has struggled for consistency in recent weeks.
With the Ghana Premier League season approaching its decisive stages, Kotoko’s leadership is betting on Zito’s experience and tactical know-how to steer the team back on course.
All eyes on Sunday clash with Aduana Stars
Asante Kotoko’s new technical team will face its first test this weekend when they host Aduana Stars at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The club’s supporters, known for their passionate backing, will be hoping that the changes can spark an immediate turnaround.
The next few weeks will be crucial for the Porcupine Warriors as they aim to finish the season strongly and reassert their dominance in Ghanaian football.
