The Ahafo Regional Commander of Immigration, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Francis Palmdeti, has challenged District Commanders and officers under his jurisdiction to adopt innovative approaches in their operations to maximize the use of limited resources available.
He emphasized the importance of strategic thinking, problem-solving, and creativity in overcoming logistical and infrastructural constraints.
Speaking at the maiden meeting of the year with District and Sector Commanders, DCOI Palmdeti acknowledged the difficulties posed by inadequate tools, logistics, and infrastructure.
However, he cautioned that resource limitations should not hinder their impact, urging officers to remain dedicated and find ways to optimize efficiency.
The meeting was aimed at setting the tone for another year of dedicated service to the nation.
Strengthening multi-agency collaboration
Highlighting the complexity of immigration management, DCOI Palmdeti emphasized the necessity of fostering strong partnerships with other security and governmental institutions. He stressed that collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other agencies is essential for intelligence sharing and coordinated operations.
He noted that the increasing influx of people into the region requires vigilance and proactive enforcement of immigration laws. Officers were instructed to enhance their monitoring and regulatory efforts to ensure compliance and prevent unauthorized entry into the country.
Enhancing immigration enforcement through inspections
The Commander underscored the importance of consistent inspections of hotels and companies as a means of curbing irregular migration and preventing unlawful employment practices.
He tasked officers with intensifying their efforts in verifying the documentation of expatriates to ensure they possess the required permits.
Furthermore, he urged officers to maintain professionalism and uphold human rights standards during their operations.
“We must ensure that while we enforce the laws, we do so with integrity, fairness, and respect for human rights,” he advised.
Combating transnational crimes
DCOI Palmdeti also raised concerns about transnational crimes such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, cybercrime, and terrorism, which pose significant threats to national security.
He urged commanders to take a proactive stance in raising awareness about these crimes within their jurisdictions.
“Prevention through education is one of our strongest tools in combating transnational crimes,” he stated.
He called on officers to actively engage local communities, including schools, churches, and recognized associations, in public education campaigns.
Additionally, he encouraged close collaboration with traditional authorities such as chiefs, queens, and opinion leaders to strengthen intelligence gathering and crime prevention efforts.
Prioritizing officer welfare and capacity building
Recognizing that officers are the backbone of effective immigration enforcement, DCOI Palmdeti emphasized the need to prioritize their welfare, morale, and continuous professional development.
He advocated for increased training opportunities and mentorship programs to enhance officers’ capabilities.
“We must create a conducive work environment that fosters mutual respect, teamwork, and professional growth. A motivated workforce translates to a more effective and efficient service,” he noted.
He urged commanders to establish a culture of mentorship within their ranks, fostering an atmosphere where junior officers could learn and develop under the guidance of experienced personnel.
Upholding integrity and excellence in service
DCOI Palmdeti reminded officers that the challenges ahead require resilience, discipline, and unwavering dedication to duty. He expressed optimism that with teamwork, innovation, and a clear vision, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the Ahafo Region would overcome obstacles and achieve its objectives.
“Let us embrace innovation, uphold discipline, strengthen our enforcement efforts, and deepen our engagement with communities,” he stated.
He also commended sister security services for their role in ensuring a peaceful Election 2024 in the Ahafo Region.
He attributed the successful conduct of the elections to the commitment and professionalism exhibited by the various security agencies.
Promoting gender equity and inclusivity in GIS
DCOI Palmdeti reaffirmed the GIS’s commitment to promoting gender equity and inclusivity in its operations.
He emphasized that gender mainstreaming goes beyond increasing female participation; it is about ensuring equal opportunities, fair treatment, and a supportive work environment for all officers, regardless of gender.
“A diverse and inclusive workforce enhances our effectiveness and strengthens our institution. Let us work together to create a workplace where every officer feels valued, supported, and empowered to contribute their best,” he urged.
Moving forward with renewed commitment
The Ahafo Regional Commander expressed confidence in the capabilities of his officers and their dedication to excellence.
He looked forward to working closely with them to push the boundaries of service delivery and make a significant impact in immigration management.
He concluded by thanking the commanders for their dedication and encouraged them to move forward with renewed vigor, collaboration, and a shared commitment to their duty.
