GAUA strike suspension clears way for UG reopening
University of Ghana
The University of Ghana will reopen for the 2026/2027 academic year on October 19, following the suspension of the strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
In a notice dated October 16, 2026, the University announced that students could begin reporting to their respective halls of residence from October 19, with lectures expected to commence on October 26.
The notice, signed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Gordon A. Awandare, indicated that the decision was taken by the Business and Executive Committee during a meeting held on October 16.
As part of the reopening arrangements, the random allocation of beds is scheduled for October 16, while orientation for fresh students will take place from October 21 to 23.
The University has urged students to settle their required fees and complete their academic registration online through the Students’ STS portal or the DiGradsys portal, following the prescribed procedures.
Management has further advised students to comply with all registration requirements to facilitate a smooth reopening and ensure that academic activities resume as scheduled.
The reopening announcement comes after GAUA suspended its strike, which had disrupted academic activities at the University.
The industrial action had raised concerns about the continuity of university operations and the academic calendar. However, the suspension has paved the way for the institution to prepare for the arrival of students and the resumption of lectures.
Students are therefore expected to complete the necessary preparations ahead of the reopening date, while the University works towards restoring normal academic activities for the new academic year.
