A routine police operation along the Accra-Cape Coast highway has resulted in the arrest of a driver after officers uncovered 14 boxes of shotgun ammunition being transported without the necessary authorisation documents.

The suspect, identified as Francis Ampomah, was apprehended during a snap checkpoint exercise conducted by police personnel at Apam in the Central Region.

According to police sources, the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and monitor the movement of potentially dangerous items on major highways.

Ampomah was driving a Toyota Voxy with registration number GT 9748-26 from Accra towards Assin Fosu when officers stopped the vehicle for inspection in the early hours of Wednesday, May 27, 2026. During a search of the vehicle, police discovered 14 boxes containing shotgun ammunition.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was unable to produce any documentation authorising the transportation of the ammunition.

As a result, the vehicle and its contents were escorted to the Apam Police Station for further examination.

The suspect has since been taken into custody and is assisting investigators with efforts to determine the ownership, source, and intended destination of the ammunition. Police are also seeking to establish whether any laws governing the transportation and possession of ammunition may have been breached.

Meanwhile, the seized ammunition remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Authorities say further action will depend on the outcome of ongoing inquiries aimed at uncovering the circumstances surrounding the shipment and identifying any other persons who may be connected to the case.
