Akufo-Addo declares Ghana a global leader in digital transformation

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted Ghana’s pioneering strides in digital transformation, citing groundbreaking initiatives such as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and e-services as catalysts for revolutionizing service delivery and promoting transparency.
Speaking during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the transformative impact of these efforts, noting that over 18 million Ghanaians are now registered under the National Identification System.
He stated that the country’s leadership in digital innovation has set it apart not only in Africa but also globally.

Bridging the digital divide
The President lauded his administration’s commitment to extending broadband access to rural areas, a move that has significantly reduced the digital divide.
This expansion has allowed broader participation in Ghana’s burgeoning digital economy, ensuring that citizens from all walks of life can engage with and benefit from technological advancements.
“Every citizen’s ability to engage with technology is a testament to our shared belief in progress and innovation,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.
He reflected on the administration’s efforts to turn long-standing aspirations into tangible realities, underscoring the importance of leveraging technology to drive national development.

Visa-free travel for African passport holders
In a landmark announcement, President Akufo-Addo revealed that Ghana has implemented visa-free travel for all African passport holders as of January 2025.
He described this policy as a critical step in advancing the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to create the world’s largest trading bloc.
“This decision aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions an integrated and connected Africa by 2063,” he stated.
The visa-free policy is expected to enhance regional integration, boost trade, and strengthen Ghana’s leadership role in promoting continental unity.

A vision of progress and connectivity
President Akufo-Addo’s address reflected a vision of a digitally connected Ghana poised to lead in innovation and integration. From enhancing public services through digitization to promoting intra-African connectivity via progressive policies, his administration’s initiatives have laid the groundwork for sustained growth and regional leadership.
As he concluded his remarks, the President reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to embracing progress and innovation, ensuring that the nation remains a beacon of transformation on the global stage.
