Immigration officer killed in dynamite explosion at Hamile
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has suffered a fatal operational incident at Hamile in the Upper West Region, following an explosion involving a motor tricycle reportedly transporting suspected dynamite.
One Immigration officer was killed in the incident, while another sustained critical injuries. The civilians allegedly conveying the suspected explosives on the tricycle were also reportedly killed.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along an unauthorised route in the border community.
Preliminary information gathered from security sources indicates that the motor tricycle was travelling along the unapproved route when security personnel attempted to intercept it.
The occupants allegedly failed to stop despite instructions from the personnel, resulting in a pursuit that ended when the tricycle exploded.
The blast reportedly struck the pursuing officers, killing one Immigration officer instantly and leaving a colleague critically injured.
The injured officer is said to be receiving attention, although details regarding the officer’s condition, the extent of the injuries and the medical facility involved remain unavailable.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the movement of suspected explosive materials through unauthorised routes and the security risks facing personnel operating along Ghana’s borders.
Hamile is a strategic border community in the Upper West Region, situated near Burkina Faso. Security agencies maintain a presence in the area to monitor cross-border movements, prevent unauthorised entry and address potential threats to national security.
In August 2026, a dynamite explosion at Aboso in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region killed four people and injured several others.
The incident occurred at a tailings site at Breman on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
Reports indicate that a gunshot fired in an attempt to kill a python triggered an explosion involving dynamite that had reportedly been stored at the site.
According to an eyewitness, residents were startled by a loud blast, which many initially mistook for an earthquake.
