Residents in the Tema Metropolis and eastern parts of Accra are expected to experience a major water supply interruption following the bursting of a 42-inch transmission line, which has disrupted distribution across several communities.
Ghana Water Company Limited, in a statement on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, stated that the pipeline burst occurred the previous day, Monday, January 19, 2026, resulting in widespread supply challenges throughout the affected areas.
Efforts to fix the damage
GWL reported that engineers and technical teams were dispatched immediately after the fault was detected and have been working around the clock to repair the damaged line.
“Due to the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repair, the restoration process requires careful handling to ensure safety, durability, and efficiency,” the statement explained.
The company added that it is doing everything possible to speed up the repair process and restore normal water supply:
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of our cherished customers.”

The interruption will affect customers across the entire Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra, including:

Baatsonaa
Spintex
Parts of East Legon
Nungua
Teshie
Surrounding communities
Support for essential services
GWL stated that essential institutions—particularly schools and hospitals—will receive special assistance to ensure continuous access to clean water during the repair works.
The company assured the public that supply will be restored immediately after repairs are completed and reiterated its apology for the inconvenience caused.
