The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The decision was confirmed following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Accra, marking the beginning of the party’s strategic preparations for the next electoral cycle.

According to party leadership, the early announcement is aimed at ensuring a transparent, fair, and well-organized process that will give aspirants ample time to campaign and engage delegates across the country.

The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, emphasised that the timeline aligns with the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy and unity.

Justin Frimpong Koduah clarified that the timing of the presidential primaries will not be subject to approval by the delegates conference, as the National Council has already exercised its mandate to approve it.

He said “The date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the date that we shall hold our presidential primaries. Because there is going to be a proposal or motion for amendment of our constitution, a planning committee has been put in place.”

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP, Joseph Osei Owusu has been selected to plan the July 2025, national delegates conference to adopt other recommendations for the amendment of the party’s constitution.

Some names have already begun circulating as possible contenders for the party’s top ticket, although no official declarations have been made.

The NPP’s decision comes at a time of heightened political activity nationwide, with both major parties preparing for what is expected to be a pivotal election season.

Observers say the early primaries could give the NPP an organisational edge and allow more time for candidate grooming, policy articulation, and grassroots mobilisation.

As the date draws nearer, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see which candidates emerge and how the race will shape the political landscape heading into 2028.
