Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled to undergo surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in the United States.

A letter from the internationally renowned medical facility confirms that Ofori-Atta’s diagnosis followed a series of medical tests, including MRI scans and a biopsy conducted in March 2025.

The official communication from Mayo Clinic, dated May 15, 2025, revealed that the diagnosis was made through an MR-guided biopsy and confirmed by a surgical pathology report prepared by Dr. Paras Shah.

The report recommends a surgical intervention to treat the cancer.

Surgery set for June 13

The letter, signed by Dr. Ahmed Abdalrhim, a consultant in the Section of International Medicine at Mayo Clinic, indicated that the prostate surgery has been scheduled for June 13, 2025.

Dr. Paras Shah of the Department of Urology will lead the surgical team.

The letter also notes that an earlier surgical date may become available and would be offered if possible.

Post-surgery recovery to delay return to Ghana

Following the surgical procedure, Mr. Ofori-Atta will require a recovery period before he is able to travel back to Ghana, the letter stated.

No specific timeframe for his return was provided, but the Mayo Clinic emphasised the need for adequate postoperative recuperation.

Medical contact open for further queries

Dr. Abdalrhim concluded the letter by inviting follow-up communication. “Please feel free to contact me if you require any additional information or have further questions,” the letter noted.

Ken Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 until early 2024.

His leadership during one of the country’s most challenging economic periods has kept him in the public eye, and news of his health is expected to draw wide national interest and concern.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared Ofori-Atta wanted to answer charges in respect of several cases, including the Strategic Mobilisation-GRA Contract, the Termination of ECG-BXC Contract, the National Cathedral payments, the Ambulance Procurement Contract, and the Tax Refund Account Utilisation.
