4 Ghanaian Hajj Pilgrims reported dead in Mecca

The number of Ghanaian pilgrims reported dead in Mecca due to a severe heat wave in Saudi Arabia has risen to four.
The forensic centre at the morgue, where the bodies are being kept before burial, has only managed to identify four Ghanaian nationals using fingerprints, a laborious process that could take several days to complete.Alhaji Abdul Rahman Alhassan Gomba, spokesperson for the Hajj Board, disclosed this, stating, “Currently, we can say four people died during the heat wave.”
Reports initially spread among the Ghanaian camp that 13 nationals had lost their lives and suspected to have traveled on non-Hajj visas.
The pilgrims, staying in Madina as part of their religious journey, faced extreme temperatures.
In response to the heat, Saudi authorities mandated that all pilgrims remain within their tents during peak heat hours between noon and 4 p.m. local time.
The situation worsened when reports of fatalities began to emerge, initially involving some Georgian nationals.
Global toll of heat wave hits 1,081
So far, around 10 countries have reported a total of 1,081 deaths during the pilgrimage.
This includes 658 Egyptians, of which 630 were unregistered pilgrims.
Other reported figures include 58 from Pakistan and 183 from Indonesia.
Malaysia, India, Jordan, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan, and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region have also confirmed deaths, though many authorities have not specified the causes.
The national meteorological centre reported a high of 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 Fahrenheit) this week at the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
The hajj has seen numerous disasters over the years, most recently in 2015, when a stampede during the “stoning the devil” ritual killed up to 2,300 people.
