NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (popularly called Chairman Wontumi), is urging party delegates to choose a 2028-ready candidate, not one selected out of personal loyalty or family ties.
With the party’s flagbearer election set for two weeks from now, Wontumi says the focus must be on winning back power.
Speaking during Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign stop in the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency on Saturday, January 17, 2026, he argued that Dr Bawumia remains the most capable contender to lead the NPP to victory.
He reminded delegates that political success—not personal connections—should guide their vote.
“If it is power that we want, then it shouldn’t be about the relationships we have with people, but about the person who can help us win the 2028 election,” he said.
Delegates of the NPP are expected to head to the polls on January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general election.
Although five aspirants are in the running, developments so far suggest the contest is shaping up into a two-man race between the party’s 2024 flag bearer and former Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.
