Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has advised residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate their homes ahead of the resumption of excess water spillage scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The advisory follows a rise in the dam’s water level to 45.2 feet, just below its 46-foot threshold. In a press statement issued Monday, September 7, GWL attributed the increase to heavy rainfall upstream, as well as continued rains across the Densu River catchment and its tributaries.

The company urged residents in affected areas to stay alert, comply with official evacuation directives and refrain from activities that could expose them to danger.

Among the communities identified as potentially affected are Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.

Stakeholders urged to prepare

GWL has further appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to take precautionary steps and prepare for evacuation.

The company said it was closely monitoring developments and would continue to keep the public informed.

GWL reiterated that the safety of residents remained its priority and called for public cooperation to facilitate a safe and orderly evacuation.

“GWL is closely watching the situation and will continue to provide updates. The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” it said.
