The University of Ghana has urged organisers of a planned demonstration against a 26% increase in accommodation fees to suspend the protest while Management engages them to address their concerns.

The Concerned Students’ Movement of the University of Ghana has scheduled the demonstration for Monday, November 2, 2026, to demand a reduction in the revised accommodation charges, refunds for students who have already paid the increased fees, and greater transparency in decisions affecting accommodation costs.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 28, the Dean of Student Affairs, Rosina Kyerematen, said Management had engaged the group and assured its members of the university’s commitment to addressing students’ immediate, medium-term and long-term needs, including accommodation.

“The Dean of Student Affairs has subsequently engaged the group on their concerns and assured them of Management’s commitment to addressing the immediate, middle-term, and long-term needs of students; including accommodation,” the statement said.

The university said the demonstration organisers had been advised to suspend the planned protest as discussions with Management and other stakeholders continued.

The planned demonstration follows a 26% increase in accommodation fees at university halls and facilities managed by the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL).

The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has also encouraged students and student groups to channel their grievances through established procedures in accordance with the university’s regulations governing junior members.

It added that it was collaborating with the Student Financial Aid Office and the Careers and Counselling Directorate to provide welfare support to students and help maintain a peaceful learning environment.
