A student of Bimbilla Senior High School (SHS) has died under tragic circumstances after being struck by a stray bullet during the fire festival known as Bugum Chugu in the Northern Region.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 5, 2025, sending shockwaves through the school.

The victim, identified as Fatima was reportedly hit in the neck by a stray bullet and died instantly. The bullet was allegedly fired by a celebrant using a small arm during the festivities.

The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the hospital morgue by security personnel.

Eyewitnesses stated that the celebrations were marked by widespread gunfire and the use of explosives, despite earlier warnings from the Municipal Security Council urging participants to refrain from discharging firearms or using dangerous implements.

Earlier, Ya-Na Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon Traditional Area in consultation with relevant stakeholders and security agencies, cancelled this year’s celebrations of the Fire Festival in Tamale and its environs.

In a statement, it said “This decision comes in response to emerging tensions amongst certain factions in the area, and reflects a deep commitment to safeguarding peace, unity and the safety of all citizens.”

The Fire Festival, known locally as “Bugum Chugu”, is celebrated by Dagombas and other ethnic groups in the Northern Region.

This year’s Fire Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 05, and will be observed in other parts of the region with the exception of the Greater Tamale Metropolis.

The statement said, “While the Ndan Ya-Na recognises the rich cultural heritage and profound significance of the Fire Festival to the people, the paramount concern at this time is the preservation of harmony and the prevention of any activity that could highten existing tensions.”

It appealed to all traditional leaders to communicate the decision to their respective communities and to support efforts aimed at ensuring calm and order during the period.

It said “The Ndan Ya-Na appeals to all residents to remain vigilant, cooperative and steadfast in upholding the peace that is vital for the progress and wellbeing of the area.”

The statement said the Fire Festival would resume in the near future under more favourable and peaceful circumstances.
