Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have officially named experienced South African tactician Eric Tinkler as their new head coach with immediate effect, ending weeks of speculation over who would take charge of the Ghana Premier League giants.

The appointment marks a significant step in the club’s efforts to strengthen its technical team ahead of the new football season, as the Porcupine Warriors seek to reclaim domestic dominance and make a strong impact in continental competitions.

Tinkler arrives with a wealth of experience spanning more than 30 years in professional football, having built an impressive reputation both as an accomplished player and a successful coach. The Portuguese-South African tactician has managed several top clubs in South Africa and is widely respected for his tactical knowledge, leadership qualities, and ability to develop competitive teams.

Throughout his managerial career, Tinkler has taken charge of some of South Africa’s biggest football clubs, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United, Bidvest Wits FC, and most recently Sekhukhune United. His extensive experience at the highest level of African club football is expected to provide Asante Kotoko with the expertise needed to compete consistently for trophies.

His coaching résumé includes several notable achievements. While in charge of Orlando Pirates, Tinkler guided the club to a runner-up finish in the CAF Champions League, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level on the continent. He also led SuperSport United to a CAF Confederation Cup runner-up finish and has won domestic honours, including MTN 8 titles and a Telkom Knockout Winners Medal.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for Asante Kotoko, who have been restructuring their football operations in preparation for the upcoming campaign. Earlier, the club appointed former Dutch international Stanley Menzo as Director of Football to oversee the technical direction of the team. Securing a permanent head coach was considered one of the board’s top priorities, and Tinkler’s arrival completes a key part of that restructuring process.

Before making his mark as a coach, Tinkler enjoyed an outstanding playing career that saw him represent South Africa with distinction. He earned 48 international caps and captained Bafana Bafana during the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He also represented his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was a member of the South African squad that lifted the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title.

His club career as a player also took him across Europe, where he featured for Barnsley FC in England, Cagliari Calcio in Italy, and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal. Those experiences helped shape his football philosophy and laid the foundation for a coaching career that has spanned more than a decade at the highest level.
