The Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has raised concerns over what he describes as severe underfunding, warning that inadequate financial resources are hampering the Department’s operations across the country.

According to Opoku, the Department received only GH¢60,000 to operate its 66 offices nationwide during the first quarter of 2026.

Speaking on Accra-based Adom FM, he questioned how the Department could effectively carry out its mandate with such limited resources.

“GH¢60,000 to run Rent Control for three months? What’s the meaning of this? The Finance Minister and all of them should listen to this and act on it,” he said.

Opoku stressed the importance of the Rent Control Department in addressing housing-related concerns and protecting the interests of both tenants and landlords.

He further disclosed that funding for the second quarter brought the total allocation to just GH¢120,000 for the entire country.

He said the amount was inadequate to support the Department’s operations and enable its offices to effectively respond to tenancy-related matters.

“For 66 offices, what do you mean? How do you expect Rent Control to function?” he added.

Opoku therefore appealed to the Finance Minister to review the Department’s allocation and provide adequate resources to enable it to effectively discharge its mandate and respond to housing and tenancy-related complaints across the country.
