Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has been crowned champions of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), extending its record to nine national titles.

The historic victory comes after the Accra-based school returned to the grand finale following a two-year absence, overcoming stiff competition to reclaim the coveted trophy.

PRESEC-Legon, the most successful school in NSMQ history, now has nine national titles to its name. After missing the grand finale in 2024 and 2025, the PRESEC team has returned with one clear objective: to reclaim the trophy and extend its record to nine titles.

PRESEC-Legon entered the 2026 competition as the record eight-time champions, having previously established itself as the most successful school in the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

The 2026 final, held at the University of Ghana Premier Domes, brought together PRESEC-Legon, two-time champions St. Augustine’s College and first-time finalists Accra Academy.

PRESEC’s journey to the final had already demonstrated the team’s determination to reclaim the title.

In the quarter-finals, the ‘Ɔdadeɛ’ boys eliminated defending champions Mfantsipim School in a highly anticipated contest at the University of Cape Coast. PRESEC finished the contest with 56 points, ahead of Mfantsipim’s 39 and Presbyterian Senior High School, Bompata’s 24.

The victory sent PRESEC into the semi-finals, where the school faced St. John’s School and Tamale Senior High School.

PRESEC maintained its composure during the decisive stages of the contest to secure its place in the grand finale. The school finished the semi-final contest with 44 points, ahead of St. John’s School and Tamale SHS.

Its return to the final was particularly significant because PRESEC had missed the championship decider in both 2024 and 2025.

The school’s final opponents also arrived with compelling stories.

St. Augustine’s College, two-time champions, secured its place after defeating five-time champions Prempeh College and 2021 winners Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary. AUGUSCO finished that semi-final with 52 points.

Accra Academy, meanwhile, made history by qualifying for the grand finale for the first time. The ‘Blɛoo’ boys defeated Bright Senior High School and Achimota School in their semi-final, finishing with 54 points.

The final therefore represented a clash between experience, tradition and ambition, with PRESEC seeking to add a ninth trophy, AUGUSCO targeting a third championship and Accra Academy attempting to complete its historic debut with a maiden title.

For PRESEC-Legon, the ninth championship marks another major milestone in the school’s remarkable NSMQ history.

The triumph further strengthens the school’s status as the competition’s dominant force and gives the ‘Ɔdadeɛ’ boys another chapter to celebrate in a legacy built over several decades.

PRESEC’s 2026 success also means the school has reclaimed the national title after a two-year wait, returning to the summit with its record now standing at nine NSMQ championships.
