Police Investigate drowning of 5 in River Owabi

The Abuakwa Police have launched an investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on Tuesday morning in which a vehicle carrying five family members veered off the road and plunged into the Owabi River near Akropong, in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District. The accident led to the deaths of the driver, Mrs. Helena Yason, her two daughters, and two passengers.

Vehicle plunges into river
According to reports, Mrs. Yason, a Career Technology teacher, was driving her daughters, 10-year-old Lordina and 5-year-old Doreen, to school. Along the way, she picked up two other passengers, Rita Agyare, a 41-year-old seamstress, and Eric Boamah Gyasi, a 28-year-old plumber, both familiar faces heading in the same direction.

Upon reaching the valley between Akropong and Dabaah, her Toyota Vibe, with registration number AS7403-21, suddenly veered off the road, plunging into the river.

Rescue efforts and casualties
Local assemblyman Mr. Kofi Nti recounted that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Nkawie and community members rushed to the scene to retrieve the bodies of the victims, who were taken to Tabere Mount Sinai Hospital. Tragically, they were pronounced dead on arrival. The body of the youngest, five-year-old Doreen, is still missing, and search efforts are ongoing.

Police investigation underway
A report has been lodged with the Abuakwa Police, who are working to determine the cause of the accident. Local authorities and the GNFS continue to monitor the area and assist in the investigation as the community mourns this devastating loss.
