Over 600 applicants eye Black Stars coaching job

Ghana’s national team coaching role has sparked massive global interest, with over 600 applications reportedly submitted for the vacant Black Stars position.

The surge in interest comes following the dismissal of Otto Addo as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team.

The vacancy comes at a critical time for the Black Stars, as the team seeks to rebuild and reposition itself following inconsistent performances.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Monday, March 31, 2026,  that it had parted ways with the German-born tactician with immediate effect, following a string of disappointing results, including back-to-back defeats in international friendlies against the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team.

The losses, including a heavy 5-1 defeat in Austria and another setback in Stuttgart, extended Ghana’s poor run in friendly matches and appeared to have sealed the coach’s fate.

In search of a new manager to take over the coaching job, the GFA President Kurt Okraku said more than 600 applications have been received.

The applicants, he said, include a mix of high-profile international managers, seasoned African tacticians, and promising young coaches eager to make their mark on the international stage.

In an interview on TV3, he said “We have received over 600 applications for Black Stars job,” he revealed, underlining the competitive nature of the selection process.”

He stated that the FA has already begun a rigorous review of applications, with both local and foreign candidates under consideration. He stressed that while the volume of interest is significant, the emphasis remains firmly on quality, experience and alignment with Ghana’s long-term football strategy.

“We will have a new coach in a week or two,” he added.

Okraku indicated that the recruitment process will be thorough and merit-based. Shortlisted candidates are expected to undergo rigorous evaluation, including technical assessments, interviews, and strategic presentations outlining their vision for the team.

As the selection process continues, attention will be focused on who ultimately gets the nod to lead the Black Stars. The chosen coach will be tasked with restoring confidence, nurturing local and international talent, and guiding Ghana back to continental and global prominence.
