In a powerful display of unity and statesmanship, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will honour President John Dramani Mahama and former Presidents Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor with the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Medal at the “World Meets in Ghana” Executive Dinner Ball in Kumasi this Friday.

The joint recognition—rare in Ghana’s political history—symbolises a shared legacy of leadership in advancing peace, national cohesion, and development. It also reflects Otumfuo’s enduring message that service to the nation outweighs political divides.

The gold medal stands as one of the highest honours reserved for leaders whose work has strengthened Ghana’s unity, improved livelihoods, and elevated the country’s global reputation. In conferring it on the three statesmen, the Asantehene acknowledges their complementary roles in shaping Ghana’s modern democratic journey.

Otumfuo Mahama Kufuor — John Agyekum Kufuor

President Mahama is recognised for sustaining critical peace efforts, including the Dagbon process and the Bawku mediation, which he helped bring to a close. His acceptance of a reconciliation roadmap and the creation of a GH¢1 billion revitalisation fund underscore his commitment to long-term stability. His tenure is also noted for efforts to steady the economy and his consistent respect for traditional institutions.

For former President Akufo-Addo, the honour highlights the consolidation of peace in Dagbon during his administration and his support for the final resolution process. It also celebrates his transformative policy agenda, particularly the Free Senior High School programme, which broadened educational access nationwide and has drawn commendation from the World Bank.

Former President Kufuor is credited with laying the groundwork for peace in Dagbon by initiating the process that would ultimately resolve the conflict. His legacy further includes the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme and steering Ghana through the HIPC initiative, securing vital debt relief and economic stability.

Collectively, the three leaders reflect different chapters of Ghana’s democratic story—each contributing to a broader narrative of peace and progress. Their joint recognition sends a clear signal: leadership is best measured by its lasting impact on the nation.

The event will be chaired by renowned business leader Sam Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, who will also be honoured for his contributions to industry and national development.

A distinguished list of awardees includes Alban Bagbin, Cassiel Ato Forson, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Johnson Asiama, Sammy Gyamfi and Alex Dadey, along with key figures in security, governance, traditional leadership, and business.

Marking the Asantehene’s 27th coronation anniversary, the dinner ball is themed “Advancing Peace and Sustainable Economic Development Through Royal Vision.” The Special Guest of Honour will be Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, while Ogiame Atuwatse III and Olori Atuwatse III will attend as royal guests.
