The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has introduced enhanced operational measures to address the significant landside congestion currently being experienced at the Port of Tema.

The congestion has been attributed to a sharp increase in import traffic, rising volumes of empty containers awaiting export, and road traffic challenges within and around the port enclave.

In a statement issued on Friday, the GPHA noted that similar congestion challenges were being experienced at several ports across the West African sub-region, leading to delays in the evacuation and transfer of laden and empty containers.

The Authority said it had placed all relevant stakeholders on heightened operational alert and was working closely with shipping lines and terminal operators to ease the situation and improve cargo movement.

According to the statement, measures being implemented include accelerating the evacuation of empty containers through increased vessel calls, strengthening truck deployment and container transfer operations, and enhancing empty container management systems.

The GPHA said it was also optimising yard utilisation and traffic management processes to improve cargo flow and maximise available terminal capacity.

It appealed to importers, clearing agents and cargo owners to expedite the clearance and evacuation of their consignments to help reduce congestion within the port.

The Authority explained that the prompt removal of cargo from the port was critical to creating additional storage space, improving operational efficiency and ensuring the continuous flow of cargo.

GPHA management said it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to implement the necessary interventions to restore normal operating conditions as quickly as possible.

It assured stakeholders of its commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient and competitive port system to support Ghana’s trade and economic growth.
