The National Democratic Congress has renamed its national headquarters after party founder Jerry John Rawlings and unveiled a bust of the late former President, as part of tributes marking his legacy.

The ceremony took place on Monday, June 22, 2026, and formed part of events to mark what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday.

Held under the theme “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” the commemoration honoured his life, leadership, and role in shaping Ghana’s political evolution and democratic governance.

Activities began with the official renaming of the party headquarters — a symbolic move to preserve the memory of the man credited with founding the NDC and laying the foundations of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. A bust in his honour was then unveiled at the same venue.

Senior party officials, supporters, and dignitaries attended the event, which reflected on Rawlings’ impact on Ghana’s democratic journey and the enduring influence of his ideals within the party.

President John Dramani Mahama was expected to deliver an address alongside other party leaders in tribute to the former military leader-turned-democrat.

Rawlings, who died in November 2020, remains one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s modern political history. He first led the country as a military ruler before guiding the transition to constitutional rule and serving as the first President of the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.

The renaming and bust unveiling underscore the NDC’s commitment to honouring its founder’s legacy and reaffirming the values he championed in public life.
