The National Theatre of Ghana is expected to receive a major facelift as the government collaborates with the People’s Republic of China to renovate and modernise the facility.

Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie announced the development during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026.

She explained that the proposed intervention would address infrastructure challenges at the National Theatre while upgrading its technical facilities and improving its ability to serve as a major centre for Ghanaian arts and culture.

“The Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China are supporting the Ministry in the renovation and modernisation of the National Theatre of Ghana, reaffirming China’s long-standing partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector,” she said.

Madam Gomashie revealed that the project was preceded by discussions between the ministry and Chinese authorities. She noted that a high-level delegation from China subsequently visited the National Theatre in December 2025 to evaluate the facility and establish the requirements for the renovation.

She said the ultimate objective was to create a modern and functional theatre that could showcase Ghanaian creative talent and cultural heritage to audiences locally and internationally.

“The intervention is expected to restore and modernise the Theatre’s infrastructure, improve its functionality and technical facilities and reposition the Theatre as a world-class theatre for the promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture,” she said.

The Minister further said the Chinese government had assured Ghana of its continued partnership beyond the renovation, particularly in maintaining the facility to the required standards.

She also highlighted steps already being taken by the theatre’s management to safeguard the facility, including stronger security and regular maintenance.

“A rigorous maintenance regime has been instituted by the management. We have improved the security situation at the National Theatre,” she said.
