The family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has formally announced the programme for her final funeral rites, which will take place on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra.
Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, November 18, Oheneba Akwasi Abayie, Otumfuo Akomforehene, said the ceremony will begin at 6 a.m. with the arrival of the cortege at the Square, where thousands of mourners are expected to gather.
He noted that all mourners are required to wear black, stressing that the family has not produced any special funeral cloth. The intention, he said, is to make the ceremony accessible to all Ghanaians regardless of social or economic status.
“The funeral is open to the general public, and everyone is invited to participate fully. Security personnel will be present to guide attendees to their designated seats,” he said.
The family further clarified that the rites on November 28 will be the final funeral observance and that no additional funeral service will be held elsewhere. This, they explained, is to ensure inclusivity and to allow all sympathisers a single unified moment to pay their respects.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and a significant figure in Ghana’s political and social development, passed away on October 23, 2025.
The government has also confirmed that a state funeral will be held in her honour, acknowledging her decades-long contribution to women’s empowerment, national advocacy, and public service.
More details on security arrangements, guest protocol, and the order of service are expected to be announced in the coming days as preparations advance for what is anticipated to be one of the largest national funerals in recent years.
