The Minister for Information, Madam Fatimatu Abubakar, has reiterated the government’s dedication to expanding access to information, particularly in underserved areas.
Speaking at the conclusion of the two-day Global Conference of International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in Accra, she emphasized the importance of free information flow in promoting transparency, governance, and sustainable development.
The event, which gathered policymakers, civil society groups, and stakeholders, focused on the critical role information plays in governance and development.
Madam Abubakar praised the collaborative spirit of the conference, noting that discussions had challenged participants to explore how information could drive not only transparency but also social accountability.
“Our discussions have pushed us to consider how access to information can serve as a catalyst for sustainable development and governance,” the Minister said.
Madam Abubakar highlighted that access to information is more than just a fundamental right—it is a tool that empowers citizens and enhances societal progress.
She also commended the implementation of the Online Records Management System (ORMS), which aims to make information more readily accessible across the country.
“Together, we are building a future where information flows freely, empowering citizens and enhancing governance,” she added.
The Minister expressed gratitude to UNESCO, the Right to Information Commission, civil society, and media partners for their roles in making the conference a success, acknowledging their dedication to advancing open governance through accessible information.
Madam Abubakar called on all participants to remain committed to fostering transparency and inclusivity in governance, underscoring the role of information as the “lifeblood of democracy” that bridges the gap between governments and the governed.
The 2024 IDUAI conference reinforced Ghana’s efforts to strengthen information access, positioning the country as a leader in promoting democratic governance and sustainable development.
