Lionel Messi has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, reaching his 18th tournament goal during Argentina’s 2026 World Cup match against Austria.

The historic strike saw the Argentina captain surpass Germany legend Miroslav Klose, who held the long-standing record of 16 goals, firmly establishing Messi at the top of the competition’s scoring charts.

The milestone came during Argentina’s Group J clash with Austria on June 22. Messi entered the match level with Klose on 16 World Cup goals after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening 3-0 win over Algeria earlier in the tournament.

The game began on a frustrating note for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner when Argentina were awarded a ninth-minute penalty following a VAR review. However, Messi missed the chance, firing his effort wide.

He later made amends before half-time, calmly finishing a flowing team move with a left-footed strike into the bottom corner to give Argentina the lead and move him ahead in the record books.

Messi struck again deep into stoppage time, reacting quickest in a crowded penalty area to score his second goal of the match and extend his tally to 18 World Cup goals, further strengthening his new record.

His brace secured a comfortable 2-0 victory for Argentina and confirmed their place in the knockout stages with a game to spare, as they continue their strong title defence.

Klose’s record of 16 goals, set at the 2014 World Cup, had long been considered one of the most difficult milestones in football. Messi’s consistency, longevity, and performances on the biggest stage have now rewritten that history.
