Medikal hot over alleged sampling of Alabaster Box hit

Ghanaian acapella group Alabaster Box has issued a stern warning to hiplife artiste Medikal, demanding the immediate withdrawal of his new single “Welcome to Africa” from all platforms, citing copyright infringement.
In a formal letter sent through their legal representatives, Alabaster Box alleges that Medikal—real name Samuel Adu Frimpong—has unlawfully sampled their popular two-decade-old hit song “Akwaaba” in his latest track without obtaining the required authorisation.
According to the group’s lawyers, the beginning of “Welcome to Africa” includes a derivative of “Akwaaba”, thereby infringing on their exclusive rights to the original composition.

Calls for complete removal
The letter demands that Medikal delete the song from YouTube, where it has so far attracted around 72,000 views, 7,900 likes, and over 1,000 comments.
On his channel, the artiste has also provided streaming links to platforms including Audiomack, Apple Music, Spotify, and Boomplay, actively encouraging fans to engage with the track.
Alabaster Box notes that “Welcome to Africa” has been aggressively promoted not just online but across traditional media, both locally and internationally.
The group is therefore asking Medikal to withdraw the song from all digital and traditional platforms, cease public performances and marketing, and terminate any contracts related to its promotion or sale.
They are also demanding that Medikal submit all related agreements and evidence of their termination, along with a comprehensive account of all revenues generated from the track. Additionally, he must provide a list of all persons or parties who have received copies of the song and outline any steps taken to retrieve them.
Should the artiste fail to meet these demands, Alabaster Box has threatened legal action, seeking full enforcement of their intellectual property rights.
As of now, Medikal has not publicly responded to the accusations.
