President John Dramani Mahama has nominated three distinguished legal professionals for appointment as Justices of Ghana’s Supreme Court, subject to parliamentary approval.

The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Amoako Asante, along with renowned legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Tony Forson.

Justice Amoako Asante is widely recognised for his judicial experience, having previously served as President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice before returning to Ghana’s judiciary.

His nomination, alongside those of Justice Bernasko-Essah and Forson, is expected to strengthen the country’s highest court with their extensive legal expertise.

The nominations were made by President Mahama in consultation with the Judicial Council, in line with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution governing appointments to the Supreme Court.

If Parliament approves the nominees following the mandatory vetting process, the number of Justices on the Supreme Court will increase from the current 18 to 21.

The three nominees are expected to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for scrutiny of their qualifications, experience and suitability for the role.

Once approved by the House, they will be sworn into office as Justices of the Supreme Court, where they will join the apex court in interpreting the Constitution and adjudicating on matters of national importance.
