President John Dramani Mahama has summoned a high-level meeting to discuss measures to strengthen Ghana’s border security and prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs and other illicit substances through the country’s ports, airports and land borders.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at the Jubilee House.

According to an invitation signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, the meeting will review existing vulnerabilities in Ghana’s border security systems and consider measures to detect and disrupt narcotics trafficking.

Key areas for discussion will include intelligence-sharing arrangements, cargo and passenger-screening systems, inter-agency coordination and the deployment of technology to combat the movement of illicit substances across the country’s borders.

The meeting is expected to bring together the heads of relevant institutions involved in border security, law enforcement and narcotics control.

Each institution has been directed to attend with its head, accompanied by no more than one relevant technical officer.

Participants have also been asked to come prepared to provide a brief assessment of existing security gaps and propose practical measures to improve intelligence sharing, surveillance, screening and joint enforcement operations.

The invitation stressed the urgency of the meeting and its national-security implications, making the personal attendance of the invited institutional heads a requirement.

The high-level engagement comes amid growing concerns about the trafficking of narcotic drugs and other illicit substances through Ghana’s ports, airports and land borders.

By bringing together key security and law enforcement agencies, the meeting is expected to provide an opportunity to strengthen coordination and develop practical strategies to address vulnerabilities in the country’s border control systems.
