President Mahama has freed 863 convicted persons through a presidential pardon, including first offenders and older inmates.
President John Dramani Mahama has pardoned 863 convicted persons as part of activities commemorating Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
The President exercised his prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, after consulting the Council of State.
A statement signed by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the decision was aimed at marking the anniversary through an act of mercy and national reflection.
The decision was announced by the Presidency on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary measures to implement the President’s decision.
Among the beneficiaries are 819 first offenders who have been granted outright release. Thirteen convicted persons aged 70 and above have also been granted outright release, while six seriously ill inmates have been released.
In addition, the sentences of 11 persons on death row have been commuted to life imprisonment. Six persons serving life sentences have also had their sentences commuted to 20-year definite terms.
Two other persons have been granted outright release following special recommendations, while three beneficiaries received pardons after submitting petitions. Three others fall under additional categories.
