Ghana and the United Arab Emirates are seeking to expand cooperation in the energy sector following high-level talks between President John Dramani Mahama and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Wednesday.

The meeting was held during the Make it in the Emirates 2026 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, where both leaders discussed new investment opportunities aimed at boosting energy security and economic development.

Central to the discussions was a proposal for the UAE to support the development of oil and gas storage facilities in Ghana. The initiative is expected to strengthen Ghana’s energy infrastructure while enhancing its position within the regional energy market.

The leaders also addressed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. They acknowledged the UAE’s strategic role in maintaining regional stability and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the hostilities.

According to the two presidents, restoring stability in the region would allow countries to focus more on innovation, economic transformation, and sustainable growth.

Recognising global shifts in energy demand, both leaders stressed the need to diversify energy portfolios beyond conventional fossil fuels. They explored opportunities in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and solar energy as part of broader efforts to reduce overdependence on crude oil and promote cleaner energy solutions.

Beyond energy, the meeting focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology, renewable energy, innovation, and artificial intelligence. The discussions reflected a shared commitment to building stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

President Sheikh Mohamed commended Ghana for its political stability and democratic credentials, describing the country as a peaceful and dependable partner in Africa. Both leaders reaffirmed the historic relationship between Ghana and the UAE and expressed confidence that their renewed collaboration would create lasting benefits for their citizens through increased trade, investment, and sustainable energy development.
