The football world is mourning the death of Jorge Messi, father and long-time manager of global icon Lionel Messi, who has passed away at the age of 68. The family had disclosed two months earlier that Jorge was receiving hospital treatment for a continuing health issue.

According to reports, Jorge died in a hospital in Rosario, Argentina — close to the Messi family residence — at around 10 p.m. local time on Friday, August 7. Argentine media first broke the news, which was soon confirmed by Newell’s Old Boys, the club that launched Lionel’s career.

Newell’s Old Boys released a statement honouring Jorge’s dedication both as a supporter of the club and as the driving force behind his son’s rise. The club highlighted the quiet but decisive influence he exerted throughout Lionel’s journey.

“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory,” the club said.

Condolences were extended to Lionel, his mother Celia Cuccittini, siblings Rodrigo, Matías and María Sol, and all relatives. No official cause of death has been released.

Beyond his role as a father, Jorge served as Lionel’s agent and business manager, guiding key professional and commercial decisions that shaped one of the most successful careers in football history.

Jorge’s health struggles became publicly known earlier in 2026 after he experienced a medical episode at home in January and required hospitalisation. The strain on the family was evident when Lionel Messi appeared visibly emotional after scoring a hat-trick for Argentina against Algeria in the World Cup. When questioned about his reaction, he said:

“No, honestly it’s something completely unrelated to sports. It’s been a few difficult days, complicated.”

Journalist Eduardo Feinmann later reported that the health problems had been ongoing for several months.

CONMEBOL joined the tributes with a formal message of sympathy:

“CONMEBOL deeply regrets the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi. We accompany Lionel, his family, friends, and loved ones with respect and affection in this moment of profound grief. May he rest in peace.”
