The Government of Ghana has officially changed the name of Kotoka International Airport back to its original name, the Accra International Airport.

The implementation of the name change, the Ministry said, will involve the systematic update of official documentation, statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, digital platforms, aviation publications, and related communication materials.

It assured the general public that the proposed name change of the Kotoka International Airport to the Accra International Airport will not affect airport operations, safety standards, or international travel arrangements.

In a press statement issued on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Ministry noted that within the records of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the airport code has remained “ACC”.

The government said it considered it “appropriate” to restore the Airport to its former and internationally recognised name.

Kotoka International Airport, named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, has long been a subject of public debate, with calls from some sections of the public to change its name due to historical considerations.

The renaming has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters arguing that the new name would promote national unity and modern branding, while critics insist the issue requires wider consultation.
