Parliament’s Majority Caucus has a new leader after James Agalga, the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, was selected to replace Mahama Ayariga as Majority Leader.

The change follows President John Mahama’s decision to nominate Ayariga, who represents Bawku Central, as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in the latest cabinet reshuffle.

Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor confirmed the appointment, stating, “Yes, it is true that James Agalga is the new Majority Leader.”

Agalga has represented the Builsa North Constituency since January 2013 and is currently serving his fourth parliamentary term. He now assumes responsibility for steering the business of the Majority Caucus in the House.

With Ayariga moving into the Executive, he relinquishes his role as Majority Leader. Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the Cape Coast South MP and Deputy Majority Leader, retains his position. He has also been a legislator since 2013 and is in his fourth term.

The appointments were announced on Friday, August 7, 2026, as part of a broader ministerial reorganisation. Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings has been nominated to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, while Ayariga has been assigned to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

President Mahama also transferred Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to the Ministry of Defence and reassigned Ahmed Ibrahim to lead the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

The Presidency says the reshuffle is intended to enhance the performance of key ministries and accelerate the implementation of the government’s development priorities.

All ministerial nominees will appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting before the House decides whether to approve their appointments, in accordance with Article 78(1) of the Constitution, which requires parliamentary approval before ministers can assume office.
