The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set for one of its most consequential internal moments as party delegates, power brokers, and influential figures converge to shape the party’s future ahead of the 2028 general elections.

It is a high-stakes exercise where loyalty, legacy, strategy, and raw political influence intersect. At the centre of it all is the search for a flagbearer capable of uniting the party, energising its base, and reclaiming power in 2028.

Five candidates, bound by a shared political ideology but divided by personal ambition, will face the verdict of the polls tomorrow as the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects a flagbearer to lead it into the 2028 general election.

Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Education and Bosomtwi MP, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, are all seeking the mandate of more than 200,000 party delegates in the presidential primary.

The vote brings to a close a bruising seven-month campaign that has tested party unity and laid bare internal divisions, as the NPP prepares to shift its focus to a direct political contest with the governing party in its bid for a swift return to power.

The early contest underscores the party’s determination to begin rebuilding ahead of the 2028 presidential election, almost three years before Ghanaians head to the polls.

The election will be held at 277 voting centres nationwide, spanning all 276 constituencies as well as the party’s national headquarters.

In all, 211,812 delegates are expected to cast their ballots, with proxy voting not permitted.

Although five candidates are contesting the race, close monitoring suggests the contest has narrowed into a two-horse battle between the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
