Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed concerns about his personal safety under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, claiming that Ghana’s democratic environment and freedom of expression are under increasing pressure.

His remarks come ahead of the NPP’s planned “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday, August 6. According to the party, the protest is intended to defend constitutional governance, uphold the rule of law and protect the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Miracles Aboagye, who was the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) explained that the demonstration is being organised because many citizens believe Ghana’s democratic values are under threat and fear they could be targeted for expressing their opinions on national issues.

He said his own concerns stem from his outspoken personality and frequent participation in public debates, stressing that citizens in a democracy should be able to express their views without intimidation.

“I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I have written to the Chief Justice. I personally don’t feel safe because I talk and I can’t stop talking. I love to talk, and I love to debate.

“I feel that my mouth will put me into trouble. That is what I feel, and it is not just me. So the thousands of people who are coming on the streets tomorrow, that is how most of them feel. That if we don’t have anything in Ghana, it is our free speech. It is our democracy. It is the fact that we are able to freely express ourselves without any fear of being targeted,” he said.

Aboagye was arrested at Kotoka International Airport in July 2026. Immigration officials acted on a stop order and handed him over to EOCO. He was subsequently granted bail in the sum of GH¢50 million and released from custody after satisfying the conditions imposed by the authorities.

The case continues to attract public attention given the scale of the alleged irregularities and the senior position previously held by Aboagye.

EOCO has indicated that its investigation remains active, and further developments, including possible additional court applications or charges, may follow once the probe is concluded. For now, the court’s freezing order ensures that the identified assets remain intact while the facts are thoroughly examined.

However, an Accra High Court ordered the temporary freezing of five bank accounts and four landed properties belonging to Miracles Aboagye.

The court granted the order on Monday, August 3, 2026, after EOCO applied for interim measures to secure the assets linked to the ongoing probe. Under the terms of the order, no transactions of any kind may be conducted on the five affected bank accounts.

In addition, the four properties cannot be sold, transferred, mortgaged, leased or otherwise disposed of until the court issues further directions. The restriction is designed to prevent any dissipation of assets while investigators complete their work.
