The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a cache of weapons and ammunition hidden in three suitcases within a 40-foot container at the Golden Jubilee Terminal in Tema.
Commissioner of the Customs Division, Brigadier General Zibrim Bawa Ayorrogo, disclosed at a media briefing that the illicit consignment included 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 rounds of live ammunition, uncovered during an intrusive examination of a container declared to contain vehicles and personal effects from the United States.
Legal breach and arrests
The undeclared firearms and ammunition constitute smuggling and concealment under Section 138 of the Customs Act 2015. The consignee’s representative and the agent responsible for the shipment have been arrested but granted bail as investigations continue.
“All other items in the container have been detained and are being examined further to assist with the investigation,” Brigadier General Ayorrogo added.
Importation of firearms requires licensing
The Commissioner cautioned importers to comply with Ghana’s legal framework when importing firearms and ammunition. He emphasized the need to secure a valid license or permit from the Ministry of Interior before importing such items.
“Failure to declare or obtain the requisite permits for firearms and ammunition is a serious offense punishable under Ghanaian law,” he stated.
Impact on national security
Brigadier General Ayorrogo stressed that smuggling weapons poses a severe threat to national security and public safety. “These illicit activities fuel criminal enterprises, escalate violence, and endanger innocent lives,” he warned.
The Customs Division, he assured, remains resolute in combating illegal activities to ensure public safety and security.

The Commissioner praised the diligence and professionalism of Customs officers and associated security agencies, whose vigilance led to the successful interception and seizure of the concealed arms.

In a related development, the Customs Division’s Rapid Response Team has received operational support in the form of a pick-up vehicle and computers donated by SIC Insurance PLC.
This contribution is expected to enhance the team’s efficiency in tackling illicit activities.
