The Local Unions of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have strongly opposed plans by certain individuals to stage a demonstration calling for the removal of the Director General of GPHA.
In a statement signed by Emmanuel Arhin, Local Union Chairman of GPHA, the union emphasized that the appointment and dismissal of the Director General is the sole responsibility of the President.
The union expressed confidence that the President will exercise this responsibility at the appropriate time in the best interest of the organization and the nation.
Union disassociates from planned protest
The union distanced itself from the planned demonstration and cautioned against any attempt by individuals or groups to push personal interests that may not align with the greater good of GPHA and the country.
“In light of this, we strongly advise any individual or group contemplating such a demonstration to desist from this action. We urge them to refrain from pushing their personal interests and agenda, which may not align with the greater good of GPHA and the country,” the statement said.
Avoid destabilization of GPHA
The union further warned that any attempts to destabilize GPHA could have severe economic implications for the country.
As a critical component of Ghana’s economy, the union urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and allow the relevant authorities to handle the matter fairly and transparently.
“We believe that our organization should be allowed to operate without undue external influences or pressures, and that the President’s office should be respected in its authority to make decisions regarding the leadership of GPHA,” the statement added.
The Local Union of GPHA reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining stability within the organization and called on all parties to support the smooth operation of Ghana’s ports for the benefit of the entire nation.
